Kickboxing – Elbows

This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.

Muay Thai – Teep Offense and Strategy

This week in Muay Thai, we will focus on using the teep, which translates to “foot jab” in Thai. The teep is a versatile weapon that can be used for range finding, disruption, off-balance your opponent, or setting up another attack. We will look at the mechanics of this kick then explore the different uses of it, especially for distance and balance manipulation.

Kids – Manners

“What does it mean to have good manners?” “Why is it important to have good manners?” “Can you give me an example of having good manners?” “This week we are going to talk about being a good, strong on the inside leader.” “At recess or on the playground are you a leader or a follower? Are you a hero or a villain?” “It takes someone who is strong on the inside to share or let others go first. It is a hero who gives praise for a good effort, or who only says nice things about others. Villains talk bad, put others down, or tease others when they mess up.” “Let’s think of two kids. The first one always pushed to be the first one in line, he grabbed toys away from other kids, and didn’t share. Plus he was always the first to laugh when someone else messed up. The second kid is good at sharing and would always invite someone who was left out to play in the game. He was quick to say, “Good try, I’m sure you’ll do better next time” when some one messed up. Which one of these kids was the strongest on the inside? Why? Which one of these kids would you like to be your friend? Which one of these kids had more friends? Why?” “At the end of the day, which one had more fun? Why? Having good manners when playing with other children might be hard at first, but in the long run it brings you more friends and fun.” “When you grow up and become an adult, how do you want them to remember you, as someone who was selfish and mean, or as a strong on the inside leader?” “What could you say to include somebody that you see is left out or lonely?” “What could you say to somebody who just lost a tough match?” “This week, let’s practice being a good, strong-on-the-inside leader”

Thoughts – The Importance of Self Awareness

A discrepancy between how you think you are perceived by others and how you are actually viewed exists in most of us. It is important to be aware of this discrepancy–at least in the abstract. We should all strive to be more self-aware, and pay closer attention to how our actions may affect and influence others. In doing so, we can aim to be better people in the world.
