Kickboxing – Knees
This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”
Muay Thai – Introduction to the Clinch
This week in Muay Thai, we will focus on the basics of the clinch! Clinching/grappling is one of the differences that separates Muaythai from other striking arts and makes it the most complete striking art there is. We will cover topics such as positioning, scoring, offense, and defense. The goal of this week is to get comfortable in this new zone and understand basic positions.
Kids – Self – Discipline
“What does that mean/ What does it mean to have good self discipline?” (Doing the right thing without needing to be told/Doing the right thing) Let’s imagine two kids: One kid gets all As in school- does all his homework and pays attention, the other kid gets pretty bad grades in most of his classes. Both of them get homework every day. They both also kick butt in Fortnite, and could play for hours. One kid loves it soooo much that the instant he gets home from school he throws his backpack behind the bed and starts rackin’ up eliminations. The other wants to play too, but decides to get his homework done before jumping online. “Who has better Discipline?” (the second kid/the kid who did his homework) “Why?” (He did the right thing/He did what he’s supposed to do) “In this case, Discipline will help us make good habits about doing work before playtime. Thats gonna make that kid smart and get him good grades throughout school.” “There’s a lot of times that you KNOWWW what the right thing to do is, but you get tempted to ignore it because of fortnite, or friends, or laziness, or whatever. EVERYBODY is tempted to do the wrong things, and sometimes the choice to do the right thing can be really tough.” “Have you guys ever had one of those arguments with mom where you DO have homework to do, but you’re rushing to do something else, like play with your friends? Have any of you guys ever lied about having homework so you could skip right to play? It’s really common for us to be tempted like this, but self discipline is all about making that tough choice to do the right thing.” “Can you guys think of an example of something that’s DEFINITELY the right thing to do, but also REALLY challenging to do?” (Focus, homework, hygiene, manners, chores, LISTENING TO PARENTS/COACHES) “Self Discipline is power. Power over temptations, power over distractions, and really just power over yourself.” “Do the right thing.

Thoughts – Facing Failure and Setbacks
Facing Failure and Setbacks One of the most difficult barriers we face in athletics, business, and in life is the fear of failure. Failure and setbacks are an unavoidable and inevitable part of the journey towards success. The most successful people are the ones who possess a high tolerance for failure. Everyone has heard how Michael Jordan was moved to the JV squad his first year of high school, how Edison failed over 10,000 times before he succeeded in building the light bulb. Although, these stories are commonly told to inspire, the message is valid and important. If you have never failed at anything in your life, let me save you the suspense….you will eventually fail at something, and experience a setback of some kind. What is important is that from failure, you learn a lesson, and use what you learn from that lesson to move toward success. As Paulo Coelho says in his excellent book The Alchemist, “The trick to life is falling down seven times, and getting up eight.”
