Martial Arts Technique Curriculum

Week of 3.5.2018 – 3.11.2018

BJJ

Fundamentals – Closed Guard

  • Low-Level Double-Leg Takedown – The double leg is a fundamental takedown in BJJ, and a movement that every practitioner should understand. From a proper wrestling stance, we will focus on changing our level and shooting on our opponent’s legs.
  • Front Choke and Scissor Sweep from Closed Guard – We will begin this week’s class by attacking the front choke from the closed guard. When our opponent moves to block our choke, we will switch to the scissors sweep.

Intermediate

  • Drills: Push/pull stance drill, russian drill, arm drag drill, chop down arms to double leg takedown, and De la Riva to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard sweep
  • Takedown: Chop Down Arms to Double-Leg
  • Ground: Pendulum Series from Closed Guard

Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, setting up double leg takedown by chopping down on the arms, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. On the ground, we are studying the pendulum series from the closed guard. Begin with the pendulum movement drill, then show the pendulum armbar, and finally show the pendulum sweep. Finish class with positional training from closed guard.

Video

Advanced

  • Drills: Guard pull to sleave and collar guard, triangle, armbar and omoplata drills..
  • Ground: Attacking from Open Guard

Remember, all advanced classes start with a hard 25 minute drilling session. There are no videos yet, so please do your research before teaching class. Everyone teaching advanced curriculum should be familiar with these movements. On the ground, we are studying how to attack using the spider guard, the De La Riva gaurd and the inverted DLR. Make sure there is at least 45 minutes of training in every advanced class.

Kickboxing – Teeps/Push Kicks

This week in kickboxing, we will focus on using the teep, which translates to “foot jab” in Thai. The teep is a versatile weapon that can be used for range finding, disruption, off-balance your opponent, or setting up another attack. We will look at the mechanics of this kick then explore the different uses of the teep!

Muay Thai – Leg Kick Defense and Counters

Last week we looked at leg kick offense and strategy. This week we look at shutting down the leg kicks and our various defensive options that we have against all weapons!

Thoughts

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Comparing your progress to that of others is a fruitless venture that inevitably leads to discouragement. Try instead to set realistic goals for yourself both in BJJ and in life, and then seek to accomplish them. Strive to be the best version of yourself that you can be, because ultimately that is all you can do.
