Fundamentals – Headlock
- Headlock Escapes on the Ground – We touched on these techniques a few weeks ago, but this week we will go straight to the ground and look at using the pendulum, hooking the leg to push, then pull, hooking the head and turning to all fours in order to defend the headlock on the ground.
- Drills: Push/pull stance drill, russian drill, arm drag drill, post drill, De la Riva to anaconda guard sweep, and smash pass to mount from the De la Riva
- Takedown: Hip Throw
- Ground: Attacking from the butterfly guard
Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, the hip throw, transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard, and passing the DLR with the smash pass to the mount. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills. On the ground, we are studying how to attack from the butterfly guard using the hook sweep and the “”take out the trash”” sweep.
This week in kickboxing, we will go over the short-range weapon in the elbow. The elbow can be used to “cut” or “spear” the opponent, depending on how you throw it. We will look at proper elbow technique and then how to properly set our elbows up and cover distance from punch range to elbow range.
Muay Thai – Round Kick Defense and Counters
Last week, our focus was on implementing the round kick against our opponent. This week, we will look at the various ways to defend and counter against the round kick! The most fundamental defense is to always check, but we will explore a few more options as well that you may like!
Don’t Put off Until Tomorrow What We Can Do Today
I’m obviously preaching to the choir because clearly all of you are here bettering yourselves, and aren’t home sitting on the couch watching TV like a large majority of people. Still, I think it is incredibly important to hear from time to time the importance of initiative, and not putting the things off for tomorrow that could be done today. This is why I have never believed in New Year’s resolutions. If something is important enough that it is on our list of things to do, then waiting for an arbitrary date to begin is a disservice to ourselves. At some point, all of you made a decision to put your health and fitness on that list, and I am proud of all of you for getting in here and working hard. Pat yourself on the back for having the courage and gumption to get in here and work out today, instead of waiting for tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is not a luxury that anyone is promised…So today is what we have.
