BJJ

Fundamentals –

  • Defending Bear Hug Under Arms – Last week we looked at how to get out of the bear hug if our partner is grabbing over our arms. This week we will be looking at how to escapes the bear hug if our partner is grabbing us under our arms. Because we a more free to use our arms in this position it makes fighting it off slightly easier. We will look at how to use our hands and hip position to break their grips, and escape to a superior position.
  • Maintain Side Control and Attack the Arm – When you have someone in side control your top priority is always to maintain the position. Even if you are naturally small superior body position will make you feel very heavy. Once we all learn some basic strategies to maintain the position, we will start looking at isolating the far side arm to attack the americana, straight armbar, and kimura.

Intermediate – Hip Throw, Drills, and Attacking from Butterfly Guard

  • Hip Throw – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, the hip throw, transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard, and passing the DLR with the smash pass to the mount. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills.
  • Attacking from Butterfly Guard – On the ground, we are studying how to attack from the butterfly guard using the hook sweep and the “take out the trash” sweep.

Kickboxing – Leg Kicks

This week in KB 1, we look at attacking the legs of our opponent, using the outside low kick and the inside low kick. These two kicks are designed to attack the lead leg of our opponent and cause damage, which in turn with slow our opponent down, and opens up another level of our offense (head, body, legs). We will also look at the basic defense for low kicks, by “checking,” and how to counter and return properly.

Muay Thai – Clinch and Zone 1 Attacks

This week we will focus on “Zone 1” attacks and clinch work. As we all know, clinch and grappling on the inside is an entirely separate game from punching and kicking at longer range. We will go over the fundamentals of clinch and positioning, as well as the basic offense, defense, and throws from the clinch. Don’t forget to take off your jewelry and take our your piercings before class this week!

Thoughts

Don’t Put off Until Tomorrow What We Can Do Today

I’m obviously preaching to the choir because clearly all of you are here bettering yourselves, and aren’t home sitting on the couch watching TV like a large majority of people. Still, I think it is incredibly important to hear from time to time the importance of initiative, and not putting the things off for tomorrow that could be done today.

This is why I have never believed in New Year’s resolutions. If something is important enough that it is on our list of things to do, then waiting for an arbitrary date to begin is a disservice to ourselves. At some point, all of you made a decision to put your health and fitness on that list, and I am proud of all of you for getting in here and working hard. Pat yourself on the back for having the courage and gumption to get in here and work out today, instead of waiting for tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is not a luxury that anyone is promised…So today is what we have.
