5.8.2017 – 5.14.2017

BJJ

Fundamentals – Headlock Defense

  • Standing Headlock Defense – Understanding how to defend the headlock is key for self-defense. This week we will look at how to defend the standing headlock by tripping our opponent to the rear and transitioning to an armbar.
  • Headlock Escapes on the Ground – In order to properly defend ourselves, we must understand how to defend the headlock not only from standing, but also on the ground. This week we will look at a few escapes from the bottom of the headlock position, and finish by transitioning to an armbar.

Intermediate – Drills, Double-Leg, Pendulum Series

  • Chop Down Arms to Double Leg – Remember, all intermediate classes start with a hard drilling session. This week focus on setting up the russian tie, the push/pull wrestling stance drill, the arm drag drill, setting up double leg takedown by chopping down on the arms, and transitioning from DLR to anaconda guard to 1 leg X-guard. Please watch the video below for a detailed look at these drills.
  • Pendulum Series from Closed Guard – On the ground, we are studying the pendulum series from the closed guard. Begin with the pendulum movement drill, then show the pendulum armbar, and finally show the pendulum sweep. Finish class with positional training from closed guard.

Kickboxing – Knees

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on a dangerous mid-range and short-range weapon: the knee. We will look at the mechanics and usage of the straight knee and the angled knee, as well as the skip knee and the barn door knee from the inside position in the “clinch.”

Muay Thai – Ognjen Topic Seminar Review

This week in Muay Thai, we will spend our time reviewing the material from the Ognjen Topic seminar. Bring any questions you have from the seminar and we will do our best to answer them! If you did not make it to the seminar, you will still be able to get some insight into the material based off what we do in class this week!

Thoughts

Healthy Lifestyles

We are a pretty unique place to train. On one side we have martial arts and self defense classes going on, and on the other we have fitness classes of many varieties taking place. The truth is, on both sides whether martial arts or fitness, we are very concerned with self-defense. Self-defense means much more than learning how to punch, kick, choke and armbar someone. Statistically speaking, most people are hurt or killed not by some violent attacker, but by heart disease, or some sort of health complication due to unhealthy lifestyles. All of you are here for a reason, and I would hedge my bets, that fitness and health is close to number 1 on everyone’s list. The reason we are here teaching is because we care about your goals, and we care about your health. We can come in and work with you for an hour a day and in that hour make great strides, but really, in the end, the food you’re eating and your habits outside the gym play an equally important role. Again, we consider ourselves a place where you can get in shape and learn some great self-defense skills, but the self-defense skills we strive to teach are more than just the martial arts. We want you to live better, eat better, and in general live healthier happier lives. If you guys ever need pointers on how to do this, please ask any of your instructors, because we are here to help!
