Fundamentals – Foot Sweep and Frame Escape

  • Foot Sweep – Lets check out some foot sweeps this week! This is a great technique not just for scoring the takedown, but other times, it will help you get things moving so that you can set up a proper takedown. Make sure you get in to learn the subtleties that make this move work!
  • Frame Escape – This is like the other side of the Pummel coin. If you’re going to be good at pummeling, you also should be good at framing. You’ll definitely need both to be successful at Jiu-Jitsu. Once you have the right understanding…you’ll be able to recover the guard using the frame on most people.

Intermediate – Double Leg and Massa Pao

  • Basic Double-Leg – One of our staple take downs being revisited here. We look at a few takedowns and repeat them throughout the curriculum. This gives you an opportunity to keep improving at them instead of just getting a quick look and then not seeing it again for 16 weeks. This double is a must have for your takedown arsenal!
  • Massa Pao Armbar and Sweep – This is a look at handling a common threat that happens when we are in the bottom of closed guard. The opponent will often try and choke you with your lapel from that top position, utilizing leverage and gravity to put you in trouble. We will cover how to neutralize the threat and work to turn the tables on the would be attacker.

Kickboxing – Stepping Off and Creating Angles

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on creating angles after we throw our combination. One of the fundamental principles of combat sports is to “hit and not get hit.” Stepping off the center line after we attack is one way to help our chances of avoiding a counter attack from the opponent. We will look at two basic movements this week: the pivot step to our lead side and the slide step to our rear side.

Muay Thai – Elbows

This week in Muay Thai we focus on elbows, one of the trickiest weapons to throw in a fight, but also one of the most rewarding. We will look at how to set our elbows up and how to safely close the distance from medium range to short/inside range to land our elbows. We will also study hand fighting and hand positioning techniques on the inside to allow us to land elbows from some sneaky positions.

Announcements

  • It is still competition season, so make sure you’re tracking what’s coming up, and what training is available to get you ready. There are small group privates, and competition training going on at pretty much every ETC location, so get on board and get some!!

Thoughts

Forget about willpower. It’s time for why-power. Your choices are only meaningful when you connect them to your desires and dreams. The wisest and most motivating choices are the ones aligned with that which you identify as your purpose, your core self, and your highest values. You’ve got to want something, and know why you want it, or you’ll end up giving up too easily.
