Fundamentals – Foot Sweep and Mount Escape
- Foot Sweep – Since Osoto Gari is also a foot technique, it goes hand in hand with the foot sweeps. There is one that is easy to do off of a failed Osoto Gari as well as other foot sweeps that will be available with Judo grips. We will look at one or more of these this week to compliment our Osoto Gari.
- Knee to Elbow – Last week we looked at the most basic escape. This week we go up a level or two with the knee to elbow. This technique works great against someone with a strong mount, and allows us to upgrade our position.
Intermediate – Double Leg and Closed Guard
- Double-Leg Takedown with Setups – We have done this takedown before, but now we will add snapping them down or throwing a punch (jab or overhand) to set it up. You’ll snap the person down as if you were trying to snap them down to the ground. This will often cause them to resist the action, standing straight up in the process. This will make entering for your double much easier. The other setup we will be looking at if time permits is throwing out that jab or overhand to put something there for our opponent to have to deal with.
- Closed Guard Sweeps and Submissions – Not preferred to be on the bottom if in a fight, but if it happens, you should have some ideas for what to do here. Keeping it simple, I recommend 3 S’s. Sweep, Submit, and Standup…not necessarily in that order. We will be looking at two of these S’s in this week’s technique. Two submissions, and one sweep as part of a triple attack from the closed guard.
Kickboxing – Reloads and Weight Distribution
One of the most fundamental principles of fighting is learning how to effectively use your weight to generate power in your strikes. This week, we will focus on transferring our weight properly between our lead leg and our rear leg while throwing strikes. We will also look at a technique called “reloading,” which allows us to throw the same-side strike two times in a row, with power. Weight shifting will play a key role in your striking development, so pay attention this week and get some good repetitions in!
Muay Thai – Teep and Push Kick Offense
This week we look at using the lead-leg “teep” and it’s variety of uses in Thai Boxing. We can use the teep, or “foot jab” as a way to set range, disrupt our opponent, off-balance them, or we can feint the teep and step in to close the pocket down. The name of the game this week will be distance control, while using the teep as our main weapon. We will also look at a variety of set ups and follow ups after throwing a push kick, depending on how our opponent reacts to the push kick.
- There are some good travel tournaments coming up and we usually have students that travel out to compete. The Pans for instance is coming up and we will certainly have people going out for it. If you’re interested in going, check with your coaches and they will probably be able to put you in contact with someone else who is also going. Strength in numbers is real!
Failure should be your teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end.
