Fundamentals – Maintaining the Mount

  • Front Bear Hug Defense – This is usually just a friend or relative being silly, but just in case it isn’t…we should have some answers. This week, for the stand up portion of class, we’ll be taking a look at front bear hugs. Both over, and under the arms.
  • Maintaining the Mount – This week we will focus on maintaining the mount once we have gotten into position, and looking at a couple of attacks. The first one will be a collar choke plus a variation for when my partner defends. The second part is an arm bar for when they defend a different way. Either way we’ve got them covered…just remember: Position before submission. Follow this rule, and you’ll be just fine.

Intermediate – Guard Passing

  • Mid-Level Single-Leg Takedown – This takedown is a bread and butter takedown and should be included in your arsenal as soon as possible. The mid-level single is ideal for self-defense because we don’t drive our knee all the way to the ground which could be dangerous. We will look at a couple of finishing options once we have control of our partners leg.
  • Closed Guard Passing – This week we will be passing the guard from the knees. Most would probably agree that standing to pass is best when the opportunity presents itself, but we MUST have options for passing when we are unable to stand in our partners guard.

Kickboxing – Reload and Weight Distribution Series

One of the most fundamental concepts in striking arts is the weight distribution principle. Any strike that is to be thrown with force needs to have weight behind it! Learning to properly transfer your weight from leg to leg while maintaining balance and positioning will be critical to learning how to punch and kick with power. This week we will look at using our weight properly to throw strikes, particularly throwing to strikes from the same side (lead side or rear side) in a row. Learn to transfer your weight and reload your weight in order to become a power puncher!

Muay Thai – Stepping Off and Exiting Safely

This week we will look at “stepping off the tracks” and creating angles to follow up our initial attacks. Whenever we create an angle on our opponent, we need to capitalize on the opportunity and make them pay! We will work on exiting to the side we finish our combo on, and then following up on that side as well to keep our angle and advantage.

Kids – Stranger Alert – What is a Stranger?

This week we’ll be starting our unit on strangers, discussing who is and is not a stranger.

Thoughts

The past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whaterver form. Both are illusions.
