Fundamentals – Double Leg and Closed Guard Offense

  • Basic Double-Leg – This technique for taking your opponent to the ground is a must have for your Jiu-Jitsu skill set. This wrestling takedown does exactly what the name says it does. We change our level, grab around both of the opponents legs, and use leverage and momentum to take them to their back. If done properly, we should end up in a dominant position on top, ready to work.
  • Closed Guard Attacks – Whenever possible, we would always prefer to be on top in a self-defense situation. This isn’t always possible. Maybe the opponent is a better wrestler, or we fall. This means we need to have some attacks from the bottom, be able to sweep our opponent, or be able to get back to your feet. We will focus on a submission and a sweep in this weeks class.

Intermediate – Low Back Clench and Side Control

  • Low Back Clench – This takedown is achieved from inside the clench. In this one, we position our head just under our opponent’s chin and our hands locked low around the belt level. With this hand position and head position, we create a sheering force that forces our opponent down to the ground.
  • Side Control – This is another pivotal position for you to make sure you understand. If you can hold your opponent down here, then advancing to mount or submitting them should become much easier. Since we looked at maintaining and controlling last week, this week we will be looking at a triple attack from side control.

Kickboxing – Instructor’s Choice

Since we are on another holiday schedule this week, the focus for the level 1 classes will be up to your instructor 🙂 Be in for a surprise in class and be ready to work HARD this week! Time to burn off the holiday calories in class!

Muay Thai – Clinch, Continued

Due to the short schedule this week for New Year’s Eve, we will continue our focus on the clinch work and inside fighting. We will expand our topics this week to include elbow work on the inside, defending the full plum and body lock, sweeps and throws from the clinch, and knee shield/guard options. Lots of live rounds from the clinch this week as well as heavy pad work!

Announcements

  • Both of the In-House events went off without a hitch and were a huge success! The competitors all walked away with valuable experience and had a great time. Thanks to all of the coaches and students that made it a success!
