Fundamentals – Stripping Grips and Armbar

  • Stripping Grips – If you ask most black belts, one of the most important aspects of training in the kimono is grip fighting. In order for an opponent or attacker to effectively pin you or throw you, they must first obtain some sort of grips. If we spend the appropriate amount of time learning this part of the game, it should be extremely difficult for someone to mount an attack against you or throw you with any amount of confidence.
  • Armbar – The armbar, also called cross armlock (judo), chave de braço in Portuguese, or ude hishigi juji gatame in Japanese; is a common grappling submission hold used to force the opponent to quit (tapout) thus ending a match in either jiu jitsu, judo or mixed martial arts (MMA). The armbar is one of the most traditional types of locks utilized in grappling, a lock that works by hyperextending the elbow joint. In the English speaking world, the armbar relates to a specific straight armlock performed with the arm of the opponent in between the attacker’s legs, while an armlock is a term that can be used to describe a number of submission attacks to the arm, including the kimura and americana locks.

Intermediate – Sprawl and Mount Attacks

  • Wrestling Sprawl – Sick of getting taken down, but don’t want to become a guard puller either?? Learn to sprawl! A sprawl is a martial arts and wrestling term for a defensive technique thats done in response to certain takedown attempts, typically double or single leg takedown attempts. The sprawl is performed by scooting the legs backwards, so as to land on the upper back of the opponent attempting the takedown.
  • Double Attack from Mount – These next couple of weeks, we’ll be looking at a really nice combination attack from mount. The first is a very good choke in and of itself. Then we add a little extra by showing you how to transition to an armbar when your partner attempts to defend your choke. This will be a great addition to your mount game and flows well with the next two weeks of Black Belt class!

Kickboxing – Round Kicks

This week in Kickboxing, we focus on the most important and strongest strike in our arsenal: the round kick. This kick is widely regarded in combat sports as one of the most powerful and devastating strikes due to the sheer force and speed with which they can be thrown. Mechanics to develop a strong round kick are essential. We will focus on using our entire body and swinging our shin like a baseball bat in order to generate maximum force. The rear round kick, the lead leg switch kick, and learning how to throw these kicks for speed and balance will be the focus!

Muay Thai – Straight Line Kicks

This week in Intermediate and Advanced Muay Thai, we will be focusing on “straight line kicks,” such as push kicks, teeps, snap kicks, and side kicks. This week will be geared on the offensive aspect of these kicks. We will look at various targets for these kicks, how to use them to disrupt our opponent’s balance, timing, rhythm, and distance, and how to attack openings presented to us after we throw one of these strikes. Straight-line kicks can be very powerful if thrown properly and at the right time! We will also look at how to use these to create space, especially against a boxer or an aggressive opponent.

Announcements

  • Lots of ETC fighters/competitors will be competing in their various disciplines over the next few months! Be sure and do your part by being a dedicated training partner (no one gets good by themselves) and by going and supporting them at the events whenever possible. It always means the world to them to have the support of their teammates, and for many of them, you won’t be able to see them fight locally for long!
  • Thanks for your continued support! You are all who make this team/family what it is. If you love what we do…refer a friend. For the lifetime of their membership, you’ll receive 10% off of your membership. This is cumulative as well, so you can potentially train for free!

Thoughts

Opinions are the cheapest commodities on earth. Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them. If you are influenced by “opinions” when you reach DECISIONS, you will not succeed in any undertaking.
