Fundamentals – Back Control and Attacks

  • Dragging Rear Naked Choke – This is a really important self defense move. If a potentially dangerous person has their back facing us, we need to learn how to take advantage of the position and subdue them right away. We will be practicing how to take our partners down from behind, then secure the choke, and stay safe in the process. Make sure when our chokes are locked in that we are burying our face in our arms to avoid potential strikes to the face.
  • Maintaining the Back – Rear Naked Choke and Armbar – If you have taken the back, you have essentially reached the holy grail of offensive jiu jitsu positions. The hardest part of taking the back is the process of maintaining the position. As a general rule of thumb it is always “position before submission.” So we will be looking at some maintenance drills and then finally settling into a dominant offensive position.

Intermediate – Guard Passing

  • Stand-Up Pass – Now that we have spent the last week looking at how to pass, let’s add in some more resistance. We need to be aware of how we can continue to advance ourself despite our partner’s best attempts at escape (framing, hipping out, etc). Once some of the reactions are addressed, let’s start really working on tightening up our closed guard passing by doing some positional training.

Kickboxing – Body Punching

This week in kickboxing, we look at the art of attacking the body. Learning how to properly punch your opponent’s midsection can add a new level to your offense! We will work on level changes, setting up the body shots, and proper follow ups after we land a devastating body punch.

Muay Thai – Leg Kicks – Offense and Strategies

This week, we will look at leg kick offense, set ups, and follow ups. Learning how to attack the opponent’s legs is a valuable tool that can slow the opponent down, take steam off their strikes, and set us up for a ton of nice follow ups. A hard leg kick is a staple of every good Thai Boxer’s arsenal, and on the other side, building up your legs to take leg kicks is key as well.

Thoughts

Don’t Put off Until Tomorrow What We Can Do Today
I’m obviously preaching to the choir because clearly all of you are here bettering yourselves, and aren’t home sitting on the couch watching TV like a large majority of people. Still, I think it is incredibly important to hear from time to time the importance of initiative, and not putting the things off for tomorrow that could be done today. This is why I have never believed in New Year’s resolutions. If something is important enough that it is on our list of things to do, then waiting for an arbitrary date to begin is a disservice to ourselves. At some point, all of you made a decision to put your health and fitness on that list, and I am proud of all of you for getting in here and working hard. Pat yourself on the back for having the courage and gumption to get in here and work out today, instead of waiting for tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is not a luxury that anyone is promised…So today is what we have.
