BJJ – Back Escapes

Fundamentals

  • Guillotine Attack and Defense – The Guillotine is very often a White Belt’s best friend: it’s simple to learn and easy to use.  This week we’ll be going over how to avoid and escape this uncomfortable situation.
  • Back Escapes – Nobody likes tapping, unfortunately building a solid defense should be your first priority when starting Jiu Jitsu, it is, after all, a Self Defense System.  This week we’ll be learning how to get out of the most dominant position in BJJ — the Back.

Intermediate

  • Guard Passing From The Knees – This week we’ll be continuing with Passing the guard from the knees.  This is an incredibly useful skill to have if your partner has a good Open Guard.  it allows you to stay crowded and pass without letting your partner set up their grips and create distance.

Black Belt

  • Half Guard Top –  Hopefully you are all feeling comfortable on the top of Half Guard by now.  this week we’ll be getting creative with the position and start looking at some very specific problems that arise.

Muay Thai – Round Kicks

Intermediate

  • This week we’ll be focusing on Round Kicks and how to work them into some basic combos.  Round Kicks are very easily your most powerful attack, and they setup the rest of your combo.  As always, our friend Buakaw is one of the masters at this technique, check him out.

Advanced

  • Because Round Kicks are so powerful, it’s incredibly important you know how to defend them well.  One of the best fighters in the game at both avoiding and countering Round Kicks is Saenchi, check out some of his highlights.  For some more advanced combos with Round Kicks you can check out Yodsanklai.

Kickboxing – Knees

  • Knees are a Muay Thai fighter’s best friend when there isn’t enough space to punch or kick.  This week we’ll be studying Basic Kneeing technique. We’ll then move on to some more advanced movements linking multiple knees together with the Skip Knee.

CrossFit – Product Review: Reebok Precision Ball Bearing Jump Rope

  • The Reebok Precision Ball Bearing jump rope is a hidden gym. The rope is weightless and the handle spins effortlessly. The adjustable rope is compact and not wire based so the rope does not kink, bend or sting! There is no extra rope sticking out when you adjust the length and the grips are so easy to hold. If you have trouble with Double Unders, find this rope!

Kids – Respect

Focus of the Month

  • Respect – Esteem for, or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality, or ability.
  • “If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow-citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem.” – Abraham Lincoln
Respect is a very difficult thing to gain, and an easy thing to lose, this is what makes it such a revered quality.  It can take years of respectable acts for somebody to respect you as a person, however one mistake can destroy that entire image.  You must consistently act in a proper manner to get respect, making it incredibly difficult to maintain, and only those who work at it are able to ingrain it in their personality.

Curriculum

BJJ

  • Little Tigers – This month we’ll be working on Passing the Guard (Crazy Legs) and how to control Side Control (Crocodile Control).  The Crazy Legs game will teach your child  Agility, while Crocodile Control will teach them Balance.
  • Tigers – This month we will continue working on Double Leg Takedown to Back Take, and we will add in the Armbar From Mount.  Both of these movements are complex and require Focus and Coordination to execute properly.
  • Advanced Tigers – This month we will add in 2 Back Escapes, which require great Body Awareness to make work.  We will also be working on our Triangles, developing Core Strength.

Muay Thai

  • Punches with Kicks – Punching and Kicking are difficult techniques to learn by themselves.  This week we will be combining the two.  This takes great balance, coordination, and focus.

Announcements

  • Congratulations to Jake Bell ( you can see him around the academy with a new Purple Belt ) and Professor Amal Easton for winning their divisions, as well as James Strater-Smith for taking 3rd in one of the toughest divisions, at the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships!  This is the most attended BJJ event in the world and all of these gentlemen were able to go and get it done.  Congrats again, and great job to all of the competitors that represented the ETC!
