Move of the Week 8/28 Single Leg and Passing Guard

Move of the week for 8/28/12 Single Leg and Passing Guard

Fundamentals Stand Up Single Leg

You will notice a few similarities between the double leg of last week and the single leg take-down of this week. You still have to get past your partners defenses when attacking the legs. This involves a slight level change as you clear the arms. This week we are attacking the lead leg once we are there. To pick up the single you must unweight your partners leg as you pick it up. This is done by driving them backwards with your shoulder. This technique, as all techniques, can be done with slowly and with complete control when done correctly.

Fundamentals Passing Guard(focusing on under)

There are two basic ways to pass the guard; over the legs and under the legs. This week we are focusing on passing underneath one of the legs. The most common mistake beginners make in performing the move is to try and rush around the guard. This can result in either the passer getting triangled or the person on bottom getting hurt. This technique, as all techniques, can be done with slowly and with complete control when done correctly. Once your partners guard is broken, secure their hips. Make sure that you change your angle, facing away from the side you are passing, and keep your elbow glued to your hips or you risk getting triangled. Once here there is zero hurry. Everyone has differing levels of flexibility. Make sure your not exceeding your partners flexibility when passing. Additionally there is no need to stack your partner when doing this move. Set it up well and you should be able to pass slowly into a perfect side control.
