Why Train BJJ?

Self Defense

For Helio Gracie, being physically frail and growing up in a rough neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, the motivating force behind his development of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s was for self defense.  Helio needed a way to overcome larger, more physically prominent attackers.  To do this, Helio modified the Judo techniques he had learned to utilize angles and leverage rather than size and strength.  In doing so he accomplished 2 things simultaneously.  First, because Jiu Jitsu is a relative of Judo, you will learn how to safely and effectively take a person to ground, rendering their punches and kicks useless, and positioning yourself to use your Jiu Jitsu.  Second, because Jiu jitsu stresses technique over force, you are able to control an attacker, regardless of size or strength, whilekeeping yourself safe.

Fitness

While Jiu Jitsu’s original purpose was for self defense, it has blossomed into an internationally regarded sport, and truly is a whole body workout.  Whether your looking to get off the couch, or are already an elite athlete, the unique movements associated with BJJ will get you fit fast.  One of the underlying philosophies of Jiu Jitsu is that your entire body should work in collaboration to maximize the effectiveness of each technique.  Just by executing the techniques you will strengthen your arms, legs, and core.  After learning the fundamentals, you will be eligible to participate in our live training session, know as ‘rolling’.  Rolling is a fun way to do High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which is the most efficient way to build strength and endurance, and lose fat.

Fun

Jiu Jitsu offers a unique mix of both mental and physical challenges.  It is often described as “chess with your body.”  Not only do you need to physically execute each technique, you need to understand the concepts behind why each technique works.  This unique melding of mind and body creates a constantly evolving sport that will keep you engaged, whether you’ve been practicing for 6 months or 6 years.  The focus Jiu Jitsu requires will saturate your attention, pushing any stress from the rest of your life aside.
